The Marketplace Seller’s Guide to creating effective MySpace profiles

March 24th, 2009

The second most important thing you need to sell effectively on MySpace is a great profile. The first, of course, is lots of friends! Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

  1. Have a good About Me section
  2. If you are expecting strangers to buy stuff from you off your MySpace page, do ensure that you introduce yourself properly to them. The About Me needs to say who you are, what you do and probably a little bit more about you. Trust is the key; people need to get a sense of trust when they read about you. They need to know who they are dealing with – otherwise they are not going to send you money.

  3. Don’t overdo your profile
  4. Many sellers tend to decorate their profile with music, images, games and such. Nothing wrong with this, except that it takes too much time to load and some people lose their patience. It is also quite possible that visitors stray away from your profile and start watching your Youtube videos. So don’t put too much stuff onto your profile. Keep it clean and simple.

  5. Be public and accessible
  6. Not only do you need to have a public profile, you also need to be accessible. This means you need to ensure that strangers can send you a message or chat with you. How else can someone ask a question about your product ?

  7. Customize your profile effectively
  8. Learn how to customize your profile effectively. To get started you can click on the “Profile link” and click on “Customize Profile”

    Customize Profile

Clicking on this link will open up a profile editor. The profile editor consists of two sections main sections – Appearance and Modules. The Appearance section is used to decide how your profile will look. The Modules section is used to decide what will be shown.

    Customize Profile

In the Appearance section, there are four options – Select Theme, Change Layout, Advanced Edit and CSS. You only need to be bothered about the first two options.

Select Theme – When you click on this option, MySpace will list all themes that it provides. Try to select a theme that is easy on the eye.

Change Layout – Try to choose a layout with lesser number of columns. We recommend either the one column (extreme right) or the two column (extreme left) layout.

    Layout

In the Modules section, remove everything that is clutters your profile page. The icons with the smiling faces are the only ones that will be shown on your profile.

Configuring The Marketplace
You can configure The Marketplace to display your products on your profile in two ways. You can either choose to display your products one at a time – this option is called the Slideshow. Or you can choose to display the maximum products that can be possibly displayed on your profile. In the latter case, The Marketplace will intelligently determine the maximum products that can be displayed on your profile and display them.

Here is how the slideshow would look.

Here is how the max product display looks.

Notice how it looks when we switch to a single column layout.

The single column layout gives the maximum space to display your product. Hence the most number of products can be displayed on your profile using this option. You can display a very large number of products !

We hope this guide has given you with a few ideas on how to create a better MySpace profile. If you have any questions, do leave a comment.
